When I was a young adult woman, I read Gone with the Wind . Taken in the historical context of 1936, it is a sweeping novel of the coming of age, but with grievous limitations. As a young white privileged woman who grew up in a liberal family, I only dimly made the connection with the race, schism white supremacy, male supremacy, and chattel slavery upon which the novel was based. To me, Wild Conviction is the "wide awake" response to Gone with the Wind. Mary Dezember has done research that gives context to the historical characters such as Emily Dickinson, Phillis, Wheatley, and Lucretia Mott, and more. The novel offers wonderful opportunities to discuss American history, poetry, geography, and precious American ideals. Read it! Teach it!
