Again I give a Dexter Gordon cd a five star review. Starts off with Montmartre. One of many Gordon originals that deserved to be played by more jazz artists. Clearly ranks as high as Monk, Parker, Rollins, Miles. This track features my favorite solo James Moody ever created in his noteable career. Also I really like the drum pattern Heath uses in Stanley the Steamer. I think it would been good to continue it through the solos. Or as in Montmartre, switch between 2 patterns.Another highlight, Barry Harris on those were the days. The only problem I have will the recording, is it sounds too dry to me. I never understood why RVG recordings sound so different. Dex sounded fullest on Bluenote, but this cd shows how he evolved and reached further levels of excellence. I will say when I heard him live, his sound was much more powerful than I expected!
