A slightly surprising Studio One reggae compilation, in late autumn (!), from those cognoscenti at the venerable Soul Jazz label. This one is an eclectic mix of DJs, lovers, roots, dancehall, vocal groups. Most of it is great especially the Wailing Souls, Alton Ellis and Johnny Osbourne. Sugar Minott is here too with two lesser known tracks and sounding as gently soulful as ever. The roots toaster Prince Jazzbo is here twice but no Lone Ranger alas.Unfortunately the Jackie Mittoo track is a dud from the early 1980s, so no organ but instead a cheesy sounding synth and a track from the 1990s by Dolly Man (no me neither) is also a pretty awful. However the rest is good to great so another thumbs up for this latest entry in this venerable series of comps.
