The tips are interesting and to the point. The editing is tight and all the sound recording is clear. A wide range of playing and practice styles are presented. There are lots of playing examples with practical instruction on how to make a solo or groove sound its best. However, the DVD should probably be relabeled, "Drum Tips Greatest Hits Volume 1". This DVD repackages instructional material found on other DVD's by the featured drummers. The good news - if you haven't seen the other DVD's, the best tips are here on one DVD at a bargain price. The bad news - if you already own DVD's by these drummers, this DVD is mostly a cut and paste of previous work that you've seen before. The Power Solos section has instruction on - Snare Accents Crossover sticking Four-way indepdence Application of rudiments Improvising within a song structure Improvising using a melody Composition based solos Free-form solosThe Groove section has instruction on - Awareness of subdivisions Use of a metronome/drum machine Counting Developing an intenal clock Practice at slow tempos How to build a groove Listen to what you play (recording your practice/performance) Melodic Ideas The characteristic beat Many other groove ideas and techniques. The special features section has two nice clips of Carter Beauford and Neil Peart and a motivational speech for any drummer who hasn't learned to read music. The advertised internet connectivity doesn't work. Accessing the site returns a server error. Still, the DVD offers a lot for the price. My only suggestion would be that a link to a site with transcriptions of the material presented would be a big plus.
